{"id":382,"date":"2011-01-25T16:00:51","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T16:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/philonfood.com\/?p=382"},"modified":"2023-03-13T17:15:47","modified_gmt":"2023-03-13T17:15:47","slug":"the-power-of-the-celebrity-chef-fish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/philonfood.com\/index.php\/2011\/01\/25\/the-power-of-the-celebrity-chef-fish\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of the Celebrity Chef: Fish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It probably hasn\u2019t escaped your notice that Channel 4 are running a series of programmes on fish, more specifically fish stocks.\u00a0 It is an admirable campaign which I passionately agree with, but what\u2019s struck me is how quickly it has had an affect.<\/p>\n<p>There have been a number of high-profile campaigns by celebrity chefs (interestingly mainly those exclusively contracted to Channel 4 such as Hue and Jamie).\u00a0 The first of Channel\u00a0 4\u2019s Great British Food Fight series on intensive chicken farming appears to have had had some affect on consumers affecting sales at the time and some immediate effect in industry with for example Hellman\u2019s pledging to use only free-range hen eggs in their mayonnaise, but it is hard to know if these resulted in a long-term change of consumer habits.\u00a0 Arguably Jamie Oliver\u2019s campaign on school dinners enjoyed more success, capturing the public\u2019s imagination and turning the subject into a hot political issue.<\/p>\n<p>But what has surprised me this time is the speed of reaction.\u00a0 After Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall\u2019s programmes on intensive and wasteful fishing techniques and trying to encourage consumers to eat a wider variety of fish (stepping away from just cod and salmon), I saw the below sign in the entrance of my local Tesco &#8211; clearly they feel the need to be defensive.\u00a0 Granted, Hugh does seem to have singled-out Tesco in particular so I can see that they would be a little defensive, but I was still surprised to see this so quickly and so prominent.<\/p>\n<p>So I think the game has changed.\u00a0 Before, a celebrity chef\u2019s campaign would have some influence on consumer behaviour which in turn through demand would affect the supermarkets.\u00a0 Now though it seems that these campaigns are directly influencing the supermarkets.\u00a0 Maybe the time has come where celebrity chefs have more power over the supermarkets than our politicians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/philonfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/tesco-fish-sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-383\" title=\"Tesco Fish Sign\" src=\"http:\/\/philonfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/tesco-fish-sign.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"666\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It probably hasn\u2019t escaped your notice that Channel 4 are running a series of programmes on fish, more specifically fish stocks.\u00a0 It is an admirable campaign which I passionately agree with, but what\u2019s struck me is how quickly it has had an affect.
