Easter Sunday: English Rose Veal

I wanted to prepare something that was quick but still a little decedant. I got some rose veal steaks, again from Tortworth Estate Farm Shop, and served that simply with left overs from the other night, some crushed new potatoes and veg.

Veal often raises an eyebrow as it has a bad reputation in the UK. It evokes images of cruelty with calves in crates. But that was then, and now British rose veal deserves another look. I won’t repeat what a lot of other people have already said on the subject (you can see a BBC page on the subject), other than to say that British rose veal is very different to continental white veal, and that all of us who drink cows milk are part of an industry that has no need bull calves which are often then exported to mainland Europe for white veal production there. So, I have to say that I am a fan of British rose veal. Go on, give it a go – maybe with more demand the main supermarkets will start stocking it. If you have a different view, do comment…

Also heard from my brother – he’s having scallops with Saturday Kitchen made Thermidor sauce – I saw it being made on the show and I’m very jealous!
