This is a great time of year. If have been keeping an eye out in the supermarkets for British fruit and vegetables, you’ve probably over-dosed cabbages, other brassicas and root veg recently. But from now there are lots of other goodies coming in to season. Jersey Royal potatoes are there now, along with outdoor rhubarb and pea-shoots (great for garnishing if you want to get chefie). Just around the corner is the short asparagus starts so expect to see a lot on the shelves.
I’ve noticed the supermarkets are still selling British brussels sprouts which are still worth going for – if you think you don’t like them or are bored of them, try thinly slicing them and sauté with some chopped bacon / lardoons, or just sauté them with a little butter – very different to what you might have with your Christmas dinner.
But whatever you are in to, please look out for seasonal British produce – its local, ecological, supporting our farmers.
